Nature Parks

Myrtle Beach State Park - This popular oceanfront park was built in the early 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corps and includes 312 acres of maritime forest with nature trails filled with live oaks, magnolias and dogwoods leading up to the beach. Seven boardwalks with adjacent access to the parking area allow easy beach access. A new pier has been built to separate the areas for surf-casting anglers and swimmers. And if you don't care for ocean swimming, there is a pool open through the summer months. The fishing pier is open from March 1 through November. Located 2 miles south of the city at US 17 South.

Huntington Beach State Park - This 2500 acre oceanfront park offers excellent Bird watching areas and includes camping and picnic facilities. A public beach is also available. Located off Hwy 17 between Murrells Inlet and Litchfield. Call 237-4440 for more details.

Brookgreen Gardens - Here you will find the world's largest outdoor collection of American figurative sculpture surrounded by beautiful gardens of moss hung oak trees, azaleas and exotic plants on its 9000 acre wildlife refuge and park. Call 237-4218 for admission pricing and directions.

Sports and Recreation

Golf - Myrtle Beach is a golfers dream with over 83 affordable golf courses in the area. The mild winters encourage the players to enjoy the sport year round. Numerous golf packages and hotel specials are offered year round.

Fishing - Fishing is just as popular as Golfing at Myrtle Beach. There are several piers open that rent fishing equipment as well as offering season passes.

Hunting - To some people it may come as a surprise that excellent game is found at the Lewis Ocean Bay Wildlife Management Area. This area is rich in wild turkey, bear, deer and quail. From Little River take SC 90 that curves westward into flat, forested countryside for many miles. You will find the main gate at Kingston Road.

S.O.S. - Myrtle Beach is the official home to "shagging", a dancing craze that started in the 50's and continues today, more popular than ever. The third weekend after Labor day is officially known as S.O.S. weekend, when thousands come to the beach to shag or to just watch.
